Free Activities to Enjoy in January

And… breathe! It’s that post-Christmas/New Year Holiday season when we’re all coming down from the excitement and feel a little bit heavier than we did a few weeks ago… However, our wallets may not be feeling quite so heavy! To help ease the strain on your bank account, the Discover team have been compiling a whole host of fun, free activities to enjoy in January – we’re showing you ways to get out and about without spending too much, or anything at all.

Want some examples?

Free activities doesn’t mean un-exciting ones, at Leeds City Museum you can find the free ‘Living with Machines: human stories from the industrial age’ exhibition which has rave reviews! Or, if living things are more your style, head over to Greater Manchester’s only public aquarium in Bolton and spend some time discovering their extensive collection of fish from all over the world. The York Railway Museum and Art Gallery are also great free options, you can even head into the Yorkshire Museum Gardens and take a picnic for the family to enjoy!

All of our locations are home to some of the most extensive libraries in the UK, many of which are acting as ‘warm spaces’ to ease the pressure of the energy crisis on the most vulnerable. This means you can stop by for as long as you need, charge your phone, read some books & even indulge in a cuppa! You can find your closest ‘warm space’ on the home page of the Discover App now.

Mixing art, social history and living things, the Museum of Barnstaple and North Devon provides not only an educational offering but you can even get involved in creating a 17th century model of Barnstaple, making individual buildings in one of their drop-in workshop sessions.

Maybe your New Years’ Resolution is to get out into nature a little more? In which case, the Discover App showcases a variety of walks and trails across all of our UK locations! You’ll find the Leeds Art Trail, Walks around Worcester, an array of Uttlesford Heritage Trails and more!

Have you ever wanted to know more about your town? If you’re one of our Tameside locals, the Portland Basin Museum is a real must-see! With a temporary exhibition of a 1920’s street, you will explore Tameside’s industrial heritage and venture into what life was like working down the mines or on the farm. There’s even an educational ‘nuts and bolts’ activity play area for kids to enjoy!

If heritage is your thing, Worcester Cathedral will certainly tickle your fancy. Erected in 1084 and one of the most important monastic cathedrals, there’s more than enough to see! You can explore the cathedral grounds and stop by the café for a coffee.

All of this and more is showcased on the Discover App and ready for you to explore – browse free activities across the UK on the free Discover App here
